Sarajevski ćevapi is a celebrated meat dish originating from the heart of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. These small, grilled minced meat sausages are a staple in Balkan cuisine, notable for their rich and robust flavor, traditionally served with somun (a type of flatbread), chopped onions, and a side of tangy sour cream. Ingredients
- Ground beef – 500 g / 1.1 lbs
- Ground lamb – 250 g / 0.5 lbs
- Onion – 1 medium, finely chopped
- Garlic cloves – 2, minced
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Black pepper – 1 tsp
- Baking soda – 1/2 tsp
- Paprika – 1 tsp
- Water – 50 ml / 3 tbsp
- Somun (flatbread) – 4 pieces
- Small onion – 1, chopped
- Sour cream – 100 ml / 1/2 cup
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and lamb thoroughly.
- Mix in the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, baking soda, and paprika.
- Gradually add the water while mixing until the meat mixture becomes well-incorporated and smooth.
- Refrigerate the mixture for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld.
- Shape the meat into small sausages, about the size of a thumb.
- Preheat a grill to medium-high heat and grill the ćevapi for 8-10 minutes, turning frequently until browned and cooked through.
- Serve the ćevapi inside fresh somun bread, with chopped onions and a dollop of sour cream on the side.
