Roti Bom is a delightful, indulgent bread hailing from Malaysia, known for its rich, buttery flavor and crisp exterior. It is a beloved treat often enjoyed at breakfast or as a snack. The origins of Roti Bom can be traced back to traditional South Asian breads, with a unique Malaysian twist that incorporates condensed milk and butter, resulting in a bread with sweet undertones and a delightful golden color.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 2 cups / 240 g
  • warm water – 3/4 cup / 180 ml
  • unsalted butter, softened – 1/4 cup / 60 g
  • sweetened condensed milk – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
  • salt – 1/2 tsp
  • sugar – 1 tbsp / 15 g
  • oil – for greasing

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions and roll them into balls. Cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. Roll each dough ball into a thin circle, spread a teaspoon of butter, then drizzle some condensed milk over it.
  5. Fold the edges inward to form a square. Roll out again slightly.
  6. Heat a non-stick skillet and grease with oil, then fry each Roti Bom on medium heat until golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  7. Serve hot, optionally with more condensed milk or curry.

Substitutions

  • all-purpose flour -> bread flour
  • unsalted butter -> margarine
  • sweetened condensed milk -> honey
