Ingredients
- all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
- water – 1 1/2 cups / 360 ml
- dry yeast – 2 teaspoons / 7 g
- sugar – 2 tablespoons / 25 g
- salt – 1 teaspoon / 5 g
- vegetable oil (for frying) – 2 cups / 480 ml
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar, then sprinkle dry yeast over the top. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, until doubled in size.
- Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat until hot, about 350°F (175°C).
- Using floured hands, pinch off small pieces of dough and gently shape them into rounds.
- Carefully drop the dough rounds into the hot oil, frying until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove the Petulla with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels.
- Serve warm with powdered sugar, jam, or honey as desired.
