With its origins rooted in generations past, it combines the wild, slightly peppery taste of nettles with simple, readily available ingredients, making it a staple in Montenegrin households.

Ingredients

  • fresh nettle leaves – 200 g / 7 oz
  • potatoes, diced – 2 medium / 300 g
  • onion, chopped – 1 large / 150 g
  • garlic, minced – 2 cloves
  • olive oil – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
  • vegetable broth – 1 liter / 4 cups
  • salt – 1 tsp
  • pepper – 1/2 tsp
  • cream (optional for garnish) – 100 ml / 3.4 oz

Instructions

  1. Wash nettle leaves thoroughly, wearing gloves to avoid stings.
  2. In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent.
  3. Add minced garlic and diced potatoes. Sauté for another 5 minutes.
  4. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring to a simmer.
  5. Add the nettle leaves, salt, and pepper, and continue to cook for 15 minutes, until potatoes are soft.
  6. Blend the soup with an immersion blender until smooth.
  7. Serve hot, optionally garnished with a swirl of cream.
