Jahnija is a hearty Bosnian stew known for its rich flavors and comforting qualities. Originating from Bosnia and Herzegovina, this dish exemplifies the region’s love for slow-cooked, flavorful meals that bring families together. Ingredients
- beef (chuck or stew meat) – 1.5 lbs / 680 g
- onions – 2 large / 300 g
- carrots – 3 medium / 150 g
- potatoes – 4 medium / 600 g
- garlic – 4 cloves
- bay leaves – 2
- paprika – 2 tsp / 4 g
- tomato paste – 2 tbsp / 30 g
- beef stock – 4 cups / 960 ml
- olive oil – 3 tbsp / 45 ml
- salt – to taste
- black pepper – to taste
- fresh parsley – for garnish
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add the beef and brown on all sides. Remove from the pot and set aside.
- In the same pot, add onions, garlic, and carrots. Sauté until onions are translucent.
- Stir in the paprika and tomato paste, cooking for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Return the beef to the pot. Add potatoes, bay leaves, and beef stock.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until beef is tender.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
