Ingredients

  • catfish fillets – 1 kg / 2.2 lbs
  • onion – 2 medium, finely chopped
  • Hungarian sweet paprika – 3 tablespoons
  • tomato paste – 2 tablespoons
  • butter – 2 tablespoons / 28 g
  • sour cream – 200 ml / 3/4 cup
  • flour – 1 tablespoon
  • salt – to taste
  • black pepper – to taste
  • water – 500 ml / 2 cups
  • lemon juice – 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions and sauté until translucent.
  2. Stir in the paprika and tomato paste, cooking for another minute.
  3. Add the catfish fillets, coating them well with the onion mixture.
  4. Pour in the water and season with salt and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cover and cook for about 20 minutes until the fish is tender.
  6. In a small bowl, mix the sour cream with the flour and lemon juice to form a smooth paste.
  7. Gradually stir the sour cream mixture into the stew, simmering gently until it thickens. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
