Ingredients

  • dried gungo peas (pigeon peas) – 1 cup / 200 g
  • water – 8 cups / 1.9 L
  • smoked ham hock – 1 medium
  • pumpkin – 1 cup / 135 g, diced
  • carrot – 2 medium, sliced
  • yam – 300 g, peeled and cubed
  • flour dumplings – 1 cup / 150 g
  • scallion – 2 stalks, chopped
  • thyme – 3 sprigs
  • scotch bonnet pepper – 1 whole
  • allspice berries – 6
  • garlic – 2 cloves, crushed
  • salt – to taste
  • black pepper – to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse gungo peas and soak in water overnight.
  2. In a large pot, add soaked peas, water, and smoked ham hock. Bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer for 1 hour, or until peas are tender.
  4. Add pumpkin, carrot, yam, and dumplings to the pot.
  5. Stir in scallion, thyme, scotch bonnet, allspice, and garlic.
  6. Simmer the soup for an additional 30 minutes until vegetables are cooked through.
  7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  8. Serve hot, ensuring each bowl has a good mix of veggies, peas, and ham.
