Ingredients
- Dried split peas – 1 cup / 200 g
- Water – 5 cups / 1.2 liters
- Smoked bacon – 100 g / 3.5 oz
- Onion – 1 medium, chopped
- Carrots – 2 medium, diced
- Garlic – 2 cloves, minced
- Vegetable broth cube – 1
- Bay leaf – 1
- Marjoram – 1 tsp
- Salt – To taste
- Black pepper – To taste
- Butter – 1 tbsp / 14 g
Instructions
- Rinse and soak the split peas in water for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
- Stir in the garlic, smoked bacon, and diced carrots. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until the bacon starts to brown.
- Add the soaked peas, 5 cups of water, vegetable broth cube, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil.
- Lower the heat and let the soup simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the peas are soft.
- Remove the bay leaf, then season with marjoram, salt, and pepper.
- For a smoother texture, blend part or all of the soup using an immersion blender.
- Serve hot with crusty bread.
