Churros are a beloved Spanish pastry known for their delightful crunch and warm, doughy center. Originating from Spain, they are commonly enjoyed as a sweet breakfast or afternoon snack. These pastries have gained global popularity, often served with thick, melted chocolate or sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. With simple ingredients that combine to create a profoundly satisfying treat, churros embody the essence of rustic European comfort food.

Ingredients

  • water – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • unsalted butter – 1/2 cup / 114 g
  • sugar – 1 tbsp / 12 g
  • salt – 1/4 tsp / 1.5 g
  • all-purpose flour – 1 cup / 125 g
  • large eggs – 3
  • vegetable oil – for frying
  • cinnamon sugar – 1/2 cup / 100 g
  • chocolate sauce – for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter, sugar, and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  2. Reduce heat to low and add the flour all at once, stirring vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a ball, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat; let cool for 5 minutes before beating in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  4. Transfer dough to a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip.
  5. Heat oil in a large pan or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Pipe 6-inch strips of dough into the hot oil, using scissors to cut off the dough. Fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Roll churros in cinnamon sugar while still warm. Serve immediately with chocolate sauce if desired.
