Borotho, a traditional bread from Lesotho, is a cherished staple that represents the heart of Basotho culinary tradition. Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
  • yeast – 2 teaspoons / 6 g
  • sugar – 2 tablespoons / 25 g
  • salt – 1 teaspoon / 5 g
  • warm water – 1 1/2 cups / 360 ml
  • vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons / 30 ml

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf.
  6. Place the loaf on a greased baking sheet and cover. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Brush the loaf with vegetable oil and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.
