Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
  • dry yeast – 2 1/4 tsp / 7 g
  • milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • butter – 1/4 cup / 60 g
  • eggs – 2 large
  • sugar – 1/4 cup / 50 g
  • salt – 1/2 tsp
  • vegetable oil – for frying
  • powdered sugar – for dusting

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk slightly and dissolve the yeast in the milk. Let it sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Mix until the dough comes together.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 portions. Shape each portion into a ball and flatten slightly.
  7. In a large pot, heat vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the flattened dough balls in the oil until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove and drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
