Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
  • Warm water – 1 1/2 cups / 360 ml
  • Active dry yeast – 2 tsp
  • Salt – 1 1/2 tsp
  • Olive oil – 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it stand for about 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the olive oil and yeast mixture.
  3. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F). Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf.
  6. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a sharp knife, slash the top of the dough a few times.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Substitutions

  • All-purpose flour -> Whole wheat flour
  • Olive oil -> Sunflower oil

Enhancements in the Next Evolution

  • Add a teaspoon of sugar to the yeast mixture to help activate the yeast more effectively.
  • Incorporate seeds such as flaxseeds or sunflower seeds for added texture and flavor.
  • Use a longer fermentation process for a deeper flavor by letting the dough rise overnight in the refrigerator.
