Tempe Goreng is a celebrated Indonesian dish, hailing from the islands of Java, where tempeh, a fermented soybean cake, takes a central role in the local cuisine. Known for its deep, nutty flavor and remarkable texture, tempe goreng involves marinating slices of tempeh in a vibrant mixture of spices and herbs before being deep-fried to a crispy perfection. This dish showcases the prowess of Indonesian culinary expertise, combining simplicity with unmatched flavor depth, often served with sambal or sweet soy sauce, elevating the humble ingredient to a delightful experience.

Ingredients

  • Tempeh – 400 g / 14 oz
  • Garlic – 3 cloves, minced
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Water – 120 ml / 1/2 cup
  • Vegetable oil – for frying

Instructions

  1. Slice the tempeh into thin pieces, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. In a bowl, combine minced garlic, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Mix well to form a marinade.
  3. Add the tempeh slices to the marinade, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Once hot, fry the tempeh slices until golden brown on each side, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Remove from the pan and drain excess oil on paper towels.
  6. Serve the crispy tempe goreng immediately with sambal or sweet soy sauce for dipping.

Substitutions

  • Tempeh -> Tofu, though texture and flavor will differ

Enhancements in the Next Evolution
