A cherished dessert from the Southern United States, Southern Butter Rolls feature tender, fluffy rolls basked in a golden pool of vanilla-infused sweetened milk. This dish is a nostalgic comfort, embodying the simplicity and warmth of Southern hospitality. Dates back to the early 20th century, it’s an embodiment of resourcefulness using staple ingredients to create a delightful dessert that captivates the senses with buttery, creamy, and slightly caramelized flavors.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 2 cups / 240 g
  • baking powder – 1 tablespoon
  • salt – 1/2 teaspoon
  • unsalted butter – 1/2 cup / 115 g, cold and diced
  • whole milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • granulated sugar – 1/2 cup / 100 g
  • vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • ground cinnamon – 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add diced butter and cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add 1/2 cup of milk, stirring until a dough forms.
  4. Roll the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  5. Sprinkle the dough with 1/4 cup of sugar and cinnamon. Roll up the dough from the long side and cut into 1-inch slices.
  6. Place the rolls, cut side down, in a baking dish.
  7. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the remaining 1/2 cup of milk, 1/4 cup of sugar, and vanilla. Stir until sugar dissolves, then pour over the rolls.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden and the milk mixture begins to thicken.
