Qofte fërguara, a quintessential Kosovar delight, are savory fried meatballs that capture the essence of the Balkans. Traditionally crafted from minced meats, often a combination of beef and lamb, these meatballs owe their distinctive flavor to aromatic herbs and spices, a reflection of Kosovo’s rich history of culinary influences. Ingredients
- Ground beef – 300 g / 10.5 oz
- Ground lamb – 200 g / 7 oz
- Onion – 1 medium, finely grated
- Garlic – 3 cloves, minced
- Bread crumbs – 100 g / 1 cup
- Egg – 1 large
- Parsley – 2 tbsp, finely chopped
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Black pepper – 1/2 tsp
- Cumin – 1/2 tsp
- Paprika – 1/2 tsp
- Olive oil – For frying, about 150 ml / 1/2 cup
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground lamb, grated onion, minced garlic, bread crumbs, egg, and parsley.
- Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, cumin, and paprika. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
- Shape the mixture into small, round meatballs, about the size of a walnut.
- Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the meatballs in batches.
- Fry the meatballs for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- Serve warm, accompanied by fresh salad or yogurt sauce.
