This is the traditional, time-tested version of the dish. It stays true to its origins, using well-established techniques and ingredients that define its authentic flavor. A perfect starting point for exploring its evolution.
The Peanut Butter Bun, or ‘Hua Sheng Jiang Bao’, is a delightful Chinese pastry that combines Western influences with traditional Chinese baking techniques. Originating from the vibrant fusion of flavors popularized in Hong Kong bakeries, these buns offer a sweet and savory sensation through their rich peanut butter filling encased in soft, pillowy bread. They are a beloved treat across China, cherished for their unique taste and satisfying texture, perfect for breakfast or as a midday snack.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 2 cups / 240 g
  • warm milk – 1/2 cup / 120 ml
  • sugar – 3 tbsp / 38 g
  • active dry yeast – 1 packet / 7 g
  • unsalted butter – 3 tbsp / 42 g
  • salt – 1/2 tsp
  • creamy peanut butter – 1/2 cup / 128 g
  • egg – 1 large

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm milk and sprinkle the yeast over it. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, and knead into a dough. Knead in the soft butter until dough is smooth.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece, place a tablespoon of peanut butter in the center, and pinch the edges to seal.
  5. Place buns seam-side down on a baking sheet, cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush buns with beaten egg for a glossy finish.
  7. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Cool slightly before serving.

Substitutions

  • all-purpose flour -> whole wheat flour

Enhancements in the Next Evolution
