Parker house roll – Classic
This is the traditional, time-tested version of the dish. It stays true to its origins, using well-established techniques and ingredients that define its authentic flavor. A perfect starting point for exploring its evolution.
Parker House Rolls are a classic American bread roll with roots stretching back to the Parker House Hotel in Boston, established in the 19th century. Known for their rich, buttery flavor and soft, flaky texture, these rolls have become an enduring staple at many holiday tables across the United States. The distinctive folded shape of the roll is both visually appealing and functional, creating a pocket that holds extra butter for an indulgent experience.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
  • baking powder – 1 tsp / 5 g
  • salt – 1.5 tsp / 9 g
  • sugar – 3 tbsp / 38 g
  • unsalted butter – 8 tbsp / 113 g
  • whole milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • active dry yeast – 2.25 tsp / 7 g
  • egg – 1 large
  • melted butter (for brushing) – 2 tbsp / 28 g

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk to about 110°F (45°C) and dissolve the yeast and sugar in it. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Melt 6 tablespoons of the butter. Once melted, mix it with the milk and yeast mixture.
  4. Beat the egg and add it to the wet ingredients.
  5. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture and pour in the wet ingredients. Mix until the dough begins to come together.
  6. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time.
  7. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 to 2 hours.
  8. Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out to a 1/2-inch thickness.
  9. Using a round cutter, cut out dough circles. Lightly brush each with melted butter and fold them in half slightly off-center to form the classic Parker House Roll shape.
  10. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover with a cloth, and let them rise again until doubled, about 30-40 minutes.
  11. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  12. Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Brush with remaining butter and serve warm.
