Ndizi na Nyama is a traditional Tanzanian dish that marries tender pieces of beef with green bananas in a deliciously spiced stew. Ingredients
- beef – 500 g / 1.1 lbs
- green bananas – 6 large / about 900 g
- onion – 1 large / 150 g, chopped
- tomatoes – 2 medium / 250 g, chopped
- garlic – 3 cloves, minced
- ginger – 1 inch / 2.5 cm piece, grated
- coconut milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
- vegetable oil – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
- curry powder – 2 tsp / 5 g
- salt – to taste
- black pepper – to taste
- water – 2 cups / 480 ml
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
- Add the garlic and ginger, stirring continuously for about 1 minute until fragrant.
- Include the beef pieces and cook until browned on all sides.
- Stir in the tomatoes and curry powder, cooking for another 5 minutes until the tomatoes soften.
- Pour in the coconut milk and water, then season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 45 minutes.
- Peel and slice the green bananas, add them to the stew, and cook for a further 15 minutes or until the bananas are tender and the beef is fully cooked.
- Adjust seasoning if necessary before serving.
