Muktuk is a traditional dish that holds a special place in the hearts and tables of Indigenous Inuit communities in Alaska, USA. Made from the skin and blubber of whales, typically bowhead, beluga, or narwhal, Muktuk is traditionally consumed raw, pickled, or cooked. This dish is known for its unique chewy texture and rich, flavor-packed blubber. Muktuk has been a staple for these communities for centuries, serving as a vital source of vitamins C and D during harsh Arctic winters. Celebrated for maintaining cultural heritage, it remains a dish of significance and pride.

Ingredients

  • Fresh whale skin with blubber – 2 pounds / 900 g
  • Sea salt – 1 tablespoon / 15 g
  • Vinegar – 1 cup / 240 ml

Instructions

  1. Rinse the whale skin and blubber thoroughly in cold water to remove any excess blood or residue.
  2. Slice the blubber into bite-sized pieces, typically in small cubes or strips, for easier consumption.
  3. Place the pieces in a large bowl and sprinkle sea salt evenly over them.
  4. Pour vinegar over the seasoned muktuk and allow it to marinate for at least 1 hour to tenderize and add a slight tanginess.
  5. After marinating, the muktuk can be served raw as is, or briefly seared in a hot pan for a few seconds to enhance flavor slightly without losing traditional texture.
