Milanesa Napolitana is a celebrated Argentine dish that marries the flavors of Italian cuisine with Argentine preferences. Legend has it that this dish was conceived in a bustling Buenos Aires kitchen in the 1940s as an inventive twist on the traditional Milanese cutlet. The juicy breaded beef is topped with tangy tomato sauce, slices of savory ham, and melted cheese—an homage to pizza, creating a fusion of culinary cultures that has become a household favorite across Argentina.

Ingredients

  • Beef cutlets – 4 pieces / 500 g
  • Breadcrumbs – 2 cups / 200 g
  • Eggs – 2, beaten
  • All-purpose flour – 1 cup / 125 g
  • Salt – 1 tsp / 5 g
  • Ground black pepper – 1/2 tsp / 2 g
  • Olive oil – 1/4 cup / 60 ml
  • Tomato sauce – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • Ham slices – 4 slices / 100 g
  • Mozzarella cheese – 1 cup shredded / 100 g
  • Oregano – 1 tsp / 2 g

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pound the beef cutlets to an even thickness.
  3. Set up a breading station with three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs seasoned with salt and pepper, and one with breadcrumbs.
  4. Dredge each cutlet in flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and coat with breadcrumbs, pressing down to adhere.
  5. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry each cutlet until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  6. Place fried cutlets on a baking sheet. Top each with tomato sauce, a slice of ham, and a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  7. Sprinkle with oregano and bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Serve immediately, garnished with a sprinkle of fresh oregano if desired.
