Maritozzo is a delectable sweet bread from Italy, widely cherished for its soft, airy texture and rich fillings. Often associated with Rome, where it is a beloved breakfast and snack item, maritozzo has historical roots that trace back to ancient times. Traditionally, it was a Lenten treat filled with whipped cream or sweetened ricotta, gifted by suitors to their sweethearts. Contemporary variations may include chocolate or fruit fillings, making it a versatile delight for any occasion.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour – 3 cups / 360 g
- Granulated sugar – 1/3 cup / 65 g
- Milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
- Active dry yeast – 2 1/4 tsp
- Eggs – 2 large
- Unsalted butter – 1/3 cup / 75 g, softened
- Salt – 1/2 tsp
- Heavy cream – 2 cups / 480 ml
- Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
- Powdered sugar – 2 tbsp
Instructions
- Warm the milk to 110°F (43°C), then dissolve the yeast in it and let sit for 5 minutes.
- In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and butter, then knead into a smooth dough.
- Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
- Shape the dough into 6 oval-shaped rolls and place them on a baking sheet. Cover and allow them to rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
- Whip the heavy cream with vanilla extract and powdered sugar until stiff peaks form. Slice the cooled rolls and fill generously with the whipped cream.
