Maritozzo is a delectable sweet bread from Italy, widely cherished for its soft, airy texture and rich fillings. Often associated with Rome, where it is a beloved breakfast and snack item, maritozzo has historical roots that trace back to ancient times. Traditionally, it was a Lenten treat filled with whipped cream or sweetened ricotta, gifted by suitors to their sweethearts. Contemporary variations may include chocolate or fruit fillings, making it a versatile delight for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour – 3 cups / 360 g

  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and butter, then knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  4. Shape the dough into 6 oval-shaped rolls and place them on a baking sheet. Cover and allow them to rise again for 30 minutes.
