Lowcountry Boil, also known as Frogmore Stew, is a beloved dish that hails from the coastal regions of the American South, particularly the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This communal feast is known for bringing people together, often enjoyed at outdoor gatherings, where fresh seafood and summer traditions intertwine. It combines shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes, seasoned with a flavorful blend of spices, all boiled in one pot for a simple yet deeply satisfying meal.
Ingredients
- Water – 4 quarts / 3.8 liters
- Old Bay seasoning – 1/2 cup / 4 oz
- New potatoes – 1.5 lbs / 680 g, halved
- Smoked sausage – 1 lb / 450 g, sliced
- Corn on the cob – 4 ears, halved
- Large shrimp, with shells – 2 lbs / 900 g
- Lemon – 2, halved
Instructions
- Fill a large stockpot with 4 quarts of water and bring to a boil.
- Add Old Bay seasoning and squeeze lemon halves into the pot, then drop them in.
- Add potatoes to the pot and cook for 10-12 minutes until slightly tender.
- Add smoked sausage and corn to the pot; continue cooking for another 5-7 minutes.
- Finally, add shrimp and cook for 3-5 minutes until they turn pink and opaque.
- Drain the pot and pour the contents out onto a large platter or newspaper for family-style serving.
