Kovrtanji is a delicate pastry from Croatia, known for its flaky layers and sweet, nutty filling. Ingredients
- all-purpose flour – 3 cups / 360 g
- unsalted butter – 1 cup / 227 g
- sugar – 1/2 cup / 100 g
- walnuts, finely chopped – 1 cup / 120 g
- honey – 1/4 cup / 85 g
- egg yolks – 2
- vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
- milk – 1/2 cup / 120 ml
- salt – 1/2 teaspoon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the butter and rub into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In another bowl, beat together the sugar, egg yolks, milk, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Mix the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until you form a soft dough. Divide the dough into two portions.
- Roll out each portion on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
- Sprinkle the chopped walnuts over the dough sheet and lightly press them in.
- Drizzle the honey over the walnut layer. Gently roll the dough into a log shape.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing into pieces.
