  • pure vanilla extract – 1 tablespoon
  • fresh orange juice – 1/4 cup / 60 ml
  • orange zest – 1 tablespoon
  • milk – 1/4 cup / 60 ml
  • sesame seeds – 1/4 cup / 30 g, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  5. Mix in the vanilla extract, fresh orange juice, and orange zest until well combined.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until a soft dough forms.
  7. Take small pieces of dough and roll them into ropes about 5 inches long. Fold each rope in half and twist to form the signature koulourakia shape.
  8. Place the shaped dough on the prepared baking sheet, brush with milk, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the cookies are golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool on a wire rack before serving.
