Kestaneli Baklava is a sumptuous pastry originating from the rich culinary heritage of Turkiye. Ingredients
- phyllo dough – 16 sheets
- unsalted butter – 1 cup / 225 g, melted
- sugar – 1 and 1/2 cups / 300 g
- water – 3/4 cup / 180 ml
- lemon juice – 1 tablespoon / 15 ml
- chestnuts – 2 cups / 240 g, boiled and peeled
- walnuts – 1 cup / 120 g, finely chopped
- cinnamon – 1 teaspoon / 2 g
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Brush a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish with melted butter.
- Layer 8 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with melted butter before adding the next.
- Mix chestnuts, walnuts, and cinnamon together, then spread evenly over the layered phyllo dough.
- Layer the remaining 8 sheets of phyllo on top, again brushing each sheet with butter.
- Cut the unbaked baklava into diamond shapes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
- While baking, prepare the syrup by simmering sugar, water, and lemon juice until sugar dissolves.
- Once baklava is baked, pour the syrup evenly over the baklava while it’s still hot.
- Allow to soak for at least 4 hours before serving, ideally overnight.
