Ingredients
- All-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
- Unsalted butter – 1 cup / 227 g, chilled
- Turmeric powder – 1 tablespoon / 15 g
- Salt – 1 teaspoon / 5 g
- Cold water – 1 cup / 240 ml
- Ground beef – 1 lb / 450 g
- Onion – 1 medium, diced
- Scotch bonnet pepper – 1, seeded and minced
- Garlic – 2 cloves, minced
- Thyme – 1 teaspoon / 1 g, dried
- Allspice – 1 teaspoon / 2 g
- Breadcrumbs – 1/2 cup / 60 g
- Beef broth – 1/2 cup / 120 ml
- Vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons / 30 ml
- Egg – 1, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, turmeric, and salt. Cut the chilled butter into small cubes and blend into the flour mixture with a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add cold water, mixing just until a dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, Scotch bonnet, and garlic; sauté until the onion is translucent.
- Add the ground beef, thyme, and allspice, cooking until beef is browned. Stir in the breadcrumbs and beef broth. Simmer until liquid is absorbed and mixture is thickened. Let it cool.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out circles of about 5 inches in diameter.
- Place 2 tablespoons of filling on one half of each circle, fold over, and seal edges with a fork. Brush with beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
