İzmir köfte – Classic

İzmir Köfte is a beloved Turkish meat dish hailing from the Aegean city of İzmir. Known for its comforting and aromatic blend of spices and herbs, this dish embodies the rich culinary heritage of Turkey. The dish consists of succulent meatballs simmered with potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers in a savory sauce, creating a meal that is both satisfying and full of flavor.
Ingredients
- ground beef or lamb – 500 g / 1.1 lb
- onion, finely chopped – 1 medium / 150 g
- stale bread, soaked and crumbled – 1 slice / 50 g
- parsley, chopped – 1/4 cup / 15 g
- egg – 1 large
- ground cumin – 1 teaspoon
- ground black pepper – 1 teaspoon
- salt – 1.5 teaspoons
- olive oil – 4 tablespoons
- potatoes, peeled and sliced – 2 large / 600 g
- green bell pepper, sliced – 1 large / 150 g
- tomatoes, chopped – 2 medium / 300 g
- tomato paste – 1 tablespoon
- water – 1 cup / 240 ml
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F).
- In a large bowl, combine ground meat, onion, bread, parsley, egg, cumin, black pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly.
- Shape the mixture into elongated meatballs.
- In a frying pan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Fry the meatballs until browned on all sides, then remove.
- In a baking dish, arrange sliced potatoes, fried meatballs, and green peppers.
- In the same pan, add the remaining olive oil and lightly fry the tomatoes for about 5 minutes.
- Add tomato paste and water to the tomatoes, stirring to create a sauce. Pour this over the meatballs and potatoes in the dish.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes to brown the top.
- Serve hot with crusty bread.
