Guaguas de pan, or “bread babies”, is a traditional sweet bread originating from Ecuador. These delightful pastries are often enjoyed during the Day of the Dead celebrations in November. The bread is shaped into whimsical figures resembling babies or dolls and is typically adorned with bright, colorful icing. These sweet treats are not only a representation of cultural traditions but also a delightful indulgence that marries simplicity with a touch of whimsical artistry.
Ingredients
- all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
- milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
- dry yeast – 2 1/4 tsp / 7 g
- unsalted butter – 1/4 cup / 57 g
- sugar – 1/2 cup / 100 g
- eggs – 2 large
- salt – 1/2 tsp
- powdered sugar (for icing) – 1 cup / 120 g
- food coloring – as needed
Instructions
- Warm the milk until lukewarm and dissolve the yeast in the milk. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into small portions. Shape each portion into a figure resembling a baby or doll.
- Place the shaped dough figures onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow them to cool completely.
- Mix powdered sugar with a bit of water to form a thick icing. Divide and color using food coloring as desired. Decorate the cooled bread babies with the icing.
