Garullas are traditional Colombian buns that originate from the Andean region of the country. These delightful breads are a crucial part of Colombian baking heritage and are often enjoyed with breakfast or as an afternoon snack paired with a warm cup of Colombian coffee. Made with a rich, buttery dough, Garullas have a distinctive yet mild sweetness and a tender crumb, resulting in a perfect balance of textures and flavors. They are particularly popular during holiday seasons and festive gatherings.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 3 cups / 360 g
  • milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • sugar – 1/2 cup / 100 g
  • unsalted butter – 1/2 cup / 113 g
  • eggs – 2 large
  • yeast – 2 1/4 tsp / 7 g
  • salt – 1/2 tsp

Instructions

  1. Warm the milk slightly and dissolve the yeast with a pinch of sugar. Let it stand until foamy, about 5 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the beaten eggs, melted butter, and yeasty milk mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth and elastic, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Shape each into a ball and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before serving.
