Fisherman’s Pie is a comforting and hearty seafood dish that hails from the coastal regions of England. Often served in rustic pubs and homes near the sea, this pie encapsulates the essence of a maritime lifestyle. Combining fresh fish with a creamy white sauce and topping it with fluffy mashed potatoes, this dish is as beloved for its simplicity as for its rich, savory flavors.

  • milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • butter – 4 tbsp / 56 g

  • all-purpose flour – 2 tbsp / 16 g
  • heavy cream – 0.5 cup / 120 ml
  • grated cheddar cheese – 0.5 cup / 60 g
  • parsley – 2 tbsp, chopped
  • salt – to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and boil the potatoes in salted water until tender. Drain and mash with 2 tablespoons of butter and a splash of milk. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  3. Poach the white fish and smoked haddock in the remaining milk until just cooked through. Remove and flake into large pieces, reserving the poaching liquid.
  4. In a pan, soften the leeks in olive oil over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Gradually whisk in the reserved poaching liquid and cream, cooking until thickened. Stir in the fish, shrimp, parsley, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Transfer the seafood mixture into an ovenproof dish, spread the mashed potatoes on top, sprinkle with cheese, and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
