It can be enjoyed plain or stuffed with both sweet and savory fillings, adapting to a wide array of tastes and preferences.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
  • water – 1 1/4 cups / 300 ml
  • salt – 1 tsp
  • butter – 1 cup / 225 g, melted
  • vegetable oil – 1/4 cup / 60 ml

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together.
  2. Gradually add the water, kneading to form a soft, elastic dough.
  3. Divide the dough into small balls, cover with a damp cloth, and let rest for 30 minutes.
  4. On a large greased surface, take one dough ball, and flatten it with your hands, stretching it gently to create a very thin sheet.
  5. Brush the sheet with melted butter and fold it inwards to form a square shape.
  6. Repeat the stretching and folding process with all dough balls.
  7. Layer the folded sheets on top of each other, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  8. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  9. Place the layered pastry in a baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
