Erachi Mappas is a traditional meat stew hailing from the lush and spice-rich landscape of Kerala, India. Ingredients
- Beef or lamb – 500 g / 1.1 lb
- Coconut oil – 3 tbsp / 45 ml
- Onions, sliced – 2 large / 300 g
- Green chilies, slit – 3
- Ginger-garlic paste – 2 tbsp / 30 g
- Tomatoes, chopped – 2 medium / 150 g
- Coriander powder – 2 tsp / 10 g
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp / 2 g
- Garam masala – 1 tsp / 5 g
- Coconut milk – 400 ml / 1.7 cups
- Curry leaves – 10 leaves
- Salt – to taste
- Water – 1 cup / 240 ml
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a large pot over medium heat.
- Add sliced onions and sauté until golden brown.
- Stir in green chilies and ginger-garlic paste, cooking until raw aroma fades.
- Add chopped tomatoes, turmeric, and coriander powder. Cook till tomatoes are soft and oil separates.
- Incorporate meat pieces and sauté until browned.
- Pour in water, cover and simmer until the meat is tender (about 1 hour).
- Stir in coconut milk, garam masala, curry leaves, and adjust salt.
- Simmer for another 10 minutes until thick and creamy.
