Crab Rangoon, a beloved American appetizer, draws inspiration from Asian cuisine with a uniquely American twist. These crispy wonton wrappers are traditionally filled with a rich mixture of crab meat, cream cheese, garlic, and green onions. Over the decades, Crab Rangoon has become a staple of Chinese-American restaurants, offering a perfect blend of textures and flavors: creamy, savory filling encased in a crispy, fried shell.

Ingredients

  • wonton wrappers – 24 pieces
  • cream cheese – 1 cup / 225 g, softened
  • crab meat – 1 cup / 120 g, canned or fresh, chopped
  • soy sauce – 1 tablespoon
  • green onions – 2 stalks, finely chopped
  • garlic powder – 1 teaspoon
  • oil – for frying
  • salt – 1/4 teaspoon
  • black pepper – to taste

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, crab meat, soy sauce, green onions, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
  2. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each wonton wrapper.
  3. Moisten the edges of the wrappers with water, then fold them into triangles or bring corners together to pinch into a purse shape.
  4. Heat oil in a deep fryer or a deep saucepan to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the wontons in small batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve hot with sweet and sour sauce or soy sauce for dipping.

Substitutions

  • crab meat -> imitation crab or shrimp
