Ingredients
- all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
- granulated sugar – 1/4 cup / 50 g
- salt – 1 tsp / 5 g
- instant yeast – 2 1/4 tsp / 7 g
- warm milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
- unsalted butter – 1/4 cup / 60 g, melted
- eggs – 2 large
- egg yolk – 1, for egg wash
- water – 1 tbsp / 15 ml, for egg wash
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
- Add warm milk, melted butter, and eggs to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough starts to form.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each into a 16-inch rope.
- Lay the ropes side by side, pinch the top ends together, and braid them. Pinch the bottom ends to seal.
- Place the braided loaf on a lined baking sheet, cover, and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix the egg yolk and water and brush over the risen loaf.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
