Chotpoti is a quintessential Bangladeshi street food, adored by millions for its bold, spicy, and tangy flavors. With a history deeply rooted in Bengali culture and cuisine, Chotpoti has transitioned from humble street corners to household favorites. Traditionally, it’s a savory vegetarian delight made with an assortment of peas, potatoes, and aromatic spices, often tailored to suit individual tastes with variations in spice levels and garnishes.
Ingredients
- Yellow peas (matar dal) – 1 cup / 200 g
- Potatoes, diced – 2 medium / 300 g
- Onion, finely chopped – 1 medium / 100 g
- Tomato, chopped – 1 medium / 120 g
- Green chilies, chopped – 2 / 10 g
- Ginger paste – 1 tbsp / 15 g
- Garlic paste – 1 tbsp / 15 g
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp / 5 g
- Chili powder – 1 tsp / 5 g
- Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp / 2.5 g
- Salt – to taste
- Lemon juice – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
- Fresh coriander leaves – 1/4 cup / 10 g
- Tamarind pulp – 2 tbsp / 30 g
- Oil – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
Instructions
- Soak the yellow peas in water overnight or for at least 6 hours.
- Boil the soaked peas in 3 cups of water until soft and tender.
- In a pan, heat oil and sauté onions until they become translucent.
- Add ginger paste, garlic paste, cumin powder, chili powder, and turmeric, and stir-fry for 2 minutes.
- Add diced potatoes and tomatoes, cooking until the potatoes are tender.
- Mix in the boiled peas with the tamarind pulp, salt, and green chilies.
- Simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Adjust seasoning with salt and lemon juice to taste.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
