The Chivito is Uruguay’s national sandwich, a scrumptious fusion of flavors that owes its fame to its rich assembly of ingredients. Originating from Punta del Este, it was created by Antonio Carbonaro in the 1940s at a restaurant called “El Mejillón.” This hearty dish combines thinly sliced tender beef steak with an array of delightful toppings, served in a beautiful bread roll. It’s a sandwich that captures the essence of Uruguayan culture, known for its beef-loving traditions and sociable meal gatherings.
Ingredients
- Beef steak, thinly sliced – 500 g / 1 lb
- Provolone cheese – 8 slices
- Tomato, sliced – 2 medium
- Lettuce leaves – 4 large
- Mayonnaise – 1/2 cup / 120 ml
- Hard-boiled eggs, sliced – 2 large
- Ham, slices – 4 slices
- Green olives, pitted – 1/4 cup / 60 g
- Sandwich rolls – 4
- Salt and pepper – to taste
- Olive oil – 2 tablespoons / 30 ml
Instructions
- Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Season the beef steak slices with salt and pepper.
- In the preheated grill or skillet, add olive oil and cook the beef slices for 2-3 minutes on each side or until cooked to your liking.
- Toast the sandwich rolls until golden brown.
- Assemble the sandwiches by spreading mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted roll.
- Layer each with lettuce, tomato slices, beef steak, ham, provolone cheese, sliced eggs, and olives.
- Place the top half of the roll over the filled half to complete the sandwich.
- Serve immediately with a side of potato fries or a light salad.
