Cebularz Lubelski is a traditional Polish bread originating from the Lublin region. Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
  • instant yeast – 1 packet / 7 g
  • warm water – 1 1/2 cups / 360 ml
  • salt – 1 teaspoon / 5 g
  • sugar – 1 tablespoon / 15 g
  • butter – 2 tablespoons / 28 g
  • onions, finely chopped – 2 medium / 300 g
  • poppy seeds – 3 tablespoons / 30 g
  • olive oil – 1 tablespoon / 15 ml

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the flour, instant yeast, salt, and sugar together.
  2. Add the warm water and mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, in a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat, add chopped onions, and sauté until soft and translucent. Set aside to cool.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Divide the risen dough into 4 equal parts and shape each into a flat disc.
  7. Top each dough disc with the sautéed onions and sprinkle generously with poppy seeds.
  8. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.
