Arabian empanadas – Classic

Arabian Empanadas, known locally as ‘Fatay’, are a vibrant fusion dish that represents Argentina’s rich tapestry of cultural influences. Originating from the Middle Eastern communities in Argentina, these empanadas incorporate typical spices and ingredients to create a savory pastry with a distinctively aromatic and spicy character. Perfect for gatherings, these empanadas provide a unique twist to traditional Argentinian fare, blending the lush, savory flavors of the Middle East with the much-loved pastry crust of the classic Argentinian empanada.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 2 cups / 240 g
  • olive oil – 1/4 cup / 60 ml
  • warm water – 1/2 cup / 120 ml
  • salt – 1/2 tsp / 3 g
  • ground beef – 1 lb / 450 g
  • onion – 1 large, finely chopped
  • garlic cloves – 2, minced
  • ground cumin – 1 tsp / 3 g
  • ground cinnamon – 1/4 tsp / 1 g
  • tomato paste – 2 tbsp / 30 g
  • pine nuts – 1/4 cup / 35 g
  • fresh parsley – 1/4 cup, chopped
  • lemon juice – 1 tbsp / 15 ml
  • ground black pepper – 1/4 tsp / 1 g

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Gradually mix in olive oil and warm water until a dough forms. Knead briefly, cover, and set aside to rest.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté onions and garlic until translucent.
  3. Add ground beef, breaking it apart, and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in cumin, cinnamon, tomato paste, pine nuts, and cook for a few minutes until fragrant.
  5. Remove from heat, mix in parsley, lemon juice, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
  7. Roll out the dough and cut into circles about 4 inches in diameter.
  8. Place a tablespoon of filling onto each circle, fold over, and seal edges by pressing with a fork.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
