Ingredients

  • apple – 4 large / 800 g
  • onion – 1 medium / 150 g
  • ginger – 2 inches / 50 g
  • garlic – 3 cloves
  • vinegar – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • brown sugar – 1 cup / 200 g
  • mustard seeds – 1 tablespoon
  • cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • cinnamon stick – 1 small / 2 inches
  • chili powder – 1 teaspoon
  • salt – 1 teaspoon
  • water – 1/2 cup / 120 ml

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and finely chop the apples. Dice the onion finely. Grate the ginger and mince the garlic.
  2. In a large saucepan, combine the apples, onion, ginger, garlic, vinegar, and water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Stir in the brown sugar, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, cinnamon stick, chili powder, and salt.
  4. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let simmer, uncovered, for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chutney thickens.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool before transferring to sterilized jars.
