Naan is a classic Indian flatbread known for its delicate, soft, and chewy texture. Originating from the Indian subcontinent, naan is a staple in many Indian meals and is traditionally baked in a tandoor—a cylindrical clay or metal oven. Its delightful flavor and versatility make it the perfect companion to spicy curries, savory meats, or enjoyed simply with butter or garlic.

Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 480 g
  • instant yeast – 2 tsp / 7 g
  • sugar – 2 tsp / 8 g
  • salt – 1 tsp / 5 g
  • warm water – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • plain yogurt – 1/2 cup / 120 g
  • olive oil – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
  • unsalted butter – 2 tbsp / 30 g
  • garlic (optional) – 2 cloves, minced

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Stir in warm water, yogurt, and olive oil until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal pieces.
  6. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Roll out one piece of dough into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Transfer the rolled dough to the hot skillet and cook for about 2 minutes on each side, until bubbles form and the naan is golden brown.
  8. Brush the cooked naan with melted butter and minced garlic, if desired.
  9. Repeat with remaining dough.
