Pulagam is a traditional rice dish hailing from the southern regions of India, particularly Andhra Pradesh. Known for its simplicity and aromatic qualities, Pulagam is often prepared during festivals and religious ceremonies. Ingredients
- Rice – 1 cup / 200 g
- Yellow Moong Dal – 1/2 cup / 100 g
- Ghee – 2 tbsp / 28 g
- Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp / 5 g
- Black Pepper – 1 tsp / 5 g, crushed
- Salt – to taste
- Water – 4 cups / 960 ml
Instructions
- Rinse the rice and yellow moong dal thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
- In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil.
- Add the rinsed rice and dal to the boiling water along with salt, reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for about 20 minutes until the rice and dal are tender.
- In a small pan, heat ghee over medium flame. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
- Add crushed black pepper to the ghee and sauté for another minute.
- Pour the hot ghee mixture over the cooked rice and dal, and gently mix to incorporate the flavors.
- Serve warm as a standalone dish or with a side of pickle or curd.

- Yellow Moong Dal -> Split Chickpeas or Red Lentils
