Vasilopita is a traditional Greek sweet bread, symbolizing good luck for the New Year. Typically baked with a coin hidden inside, this bread is traditionally served on New Year’s Day, offering a delightful mix of aromas from oranges and spices. Its origins can be traced back to the story of Saint Basil, who was known for his generosity to the poor. Ingredients

  • all-purpose flour – 4 cups / 520 g
  • granulated sugar – 1 1/2 cups / 300 g
  • unsalted butter – 1/2 cup / 115 g, melted
  • eggs – 4 large
  • whole milk – 1 cup / 240 ml
  • baking powder – 2 teaspoons
  • orange zest – from 2 oranges
  • vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • ground Mahleb (or anise seeds) – 1 teaspoon
  • salt – 1/4 teaspoon
  • coin wrapped in foil – 1
  • powdered sugar – for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 10-inch (25 cm) round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the sugar and eggs until light and fluffy.
  3. Gradually mix in the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and ground Mahleb. Add to the wet mixture, combining until smooth.
  5. Fold in the orange zest, ensuring it’s evenly distributed.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Insert the coin wrapped in foil discreetly into the batter.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack.
  9. Once completely cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar before serving.
