Ingredients
- All-purpose flour – 4 cups / 500 g
- Warm water – 1 1/2 cups / 360 ml
- Active dry yeast – 2 tsp
- Salt – 1 1/2 tsp
- Olive oil – 2 tbsp
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and let it stand for about 5 minutes, or until foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the olive oil and yeast mixture.
- Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until a rough dough forms. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 220°C (428°F). Punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf.
- Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a sharp knife, slash the top of the dough a few times.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Substitutions
- All-purpose flour -> Whole wheat flour
- Olive oil -> Sunflower oil
Enhancements in the Next Evolution
- Add a teaspoon of sugar to the yeast mixture to help activate the yeast more effectively.
- Incorporate seeds such as flaxseeds or sunflower seeds for added texture and flavor.
- Use a longer fermentation process for a deeper flavor by letting the dough rise overnight in the refrigerator.
