Pastechi is a beloved Aruban pastry, often enjoyed as a breakfast or snack. These golden-brown, half-moon shaped treats are filled with a variety of savory ingredients, including cheese, chicken, beef, or tuna. Ingredients
- all-purpose flour – 3 cups / 360 g
- baking powder – 1 tbsp
- unsalted butter – 1/2 cup / 115 g
- water – 3/4 cup / 180 ml
- salt – 1 tsp
- ground beef – 1 lb / 450 g
- onion – 1 small, diced
- garlic – 2 cloves, minced
- paprika – 1 tsp
- black pepper – 1/2 tsp
- vegetable oil – for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add water, mixing until a dough forms. Knead gently until smooth, cover, and let rest for 30 minutes.
- In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until browned. Add onion and garlic, cooking until onion is soft. Season with paprika and black pepper.
- Roll dough to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles (4 inches diameter).
- Place a spoonful of the beef mixture on each circle, fold and seal edges by pressing with a fork.
- Heat oil in a frying pan and fry pastesci until golden brown on both sides.
- Drain on paper towels and serve warm.
