Joumou soup is a spicy, aromatic dish that holds a special place in the heart of Haitian culture. Traditionally served on January 1st to commemorate Haiti’s independence from France, this vibrant soup is a symbol of freedom and celebration. Originally reserved for the French colonial masters, Joumou has become a proud emblem of cultural identity and resilience. Combining the rich flavors of pumpkin, herbs, meats, and vegetables, this soup embodies warmth and communal joy.
Ingredients
- Beef chuck, cubed – 1 lb / 450 g
- Pumpkin, peeled and cubed – 2 lb / 900 g
- Russet potatoes, diced – 2 medium / 300 g
- Cabbage, chopped – 1/2 head / 300 g
- Carrots, sliced – 2 large / 240 g
- Turnip, diced – 1 medium / 150 g
- Celery, chopped – 2 stalks / 100 g
- Onion, chopped – 1 large / 150 g
- Garlic, minced – 4 cloves / 20 g
- Parsley, chopped – 1/4 cup / 15 g
- Thyme – 2 tsp / 2 g
- Scotch bonnet pepper, whole – 1
- Rigatoni pasta – 1 cup / 100 g
- Vegetable broth – 8 cups / 2 L
- Lime juice – 2 tbsp / 30 ml
- Salt – To taste
- Black pepper – To taste
Instructions
- 1. In a large pot, sear the beef chuck cubes over medium-high heat until browned on all sides. Remove and set aside.
- 2. In the same pot, add pumpkin chunks and cover with water. Simmer until soft, about 20 minutes, then puree using an immersion blender or in batches using a regular blender.
- 3. Return beef to the pot, add vegetable broth, and bring to a simmer.
- 4. Add potatoes, cabbage, carrots, turnip, celery, onion, and garlic. Simmer for 30 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
- 5. Stir in chopped parsley, thyme, and whole Scotch bonnet pepper for heat. Continue to cook for another 10 minutes, adjusting seasoning with salt and pepper.
- 6. Add rigatoni pasta, cooking until al dente, about 10 minutes.
- 7. Finish with lime juice for brightness and adjust seasoning if necessary before serving.
